Force Close of Mobisle Notes

First off we would like to apologize for the latest problems that occurred since our last update.

Many people have requested that we should remove the copy protection of the app and since it’s free we didn’t see a problem with this. In the last update we made some minor changes to Mobisle Notes but nothing that would harm the apps database structure. What we did do was to remove the copy protection which is done in the developer console in Android market. We did this at the same time as we released the update.

What we have come to learn is that when we removed the copy protection some of the databases got corrupted. Unfortunately, despite all our efforts, we are not able to make any updates that fixes this problem. We are not in the habit of blaming some else but this problem has occured for other developersLink1, Link2, Link3,  and nothing has been done to deal with it. It extremely unfortunate that this happens to our valuable users and it makes us very sad. Only with your help can we put pressure on Google to avoid this in the future. We have narrowed it down to being only Android 1.5 (IRIS, Hero etc).

As a fellow developer puts it:

“In fact, that’s the worst part about this whole thing – devs get totally blindsided by this bug, because they can’t actually try and install their own paid apps, therefore can never see that the Market DRM changed the app’s UID. By the time we figure out what happened, dozens or hundreds of users have downloaded the changed app and seen buggy prefs or instant force closes, and they blame us, not the Market.”

Now to the worst part. To fix this problem you will need to reinstall the application which will cause all data within the app to be lost. I can once again assure you that we have tried our hardest to come up with a solution which will not erase all data but there is no way.

We are currently working hard to extend Mobisle Notes with an automatic backup of the database on the SD-card which will remove the danger of something similar happening again.

We are very grateful for your understanding and hope that you will keep using Mobisle Notes.

It’s a tragic situation but your efforts, both in fixing the problem, and in helping explain what’s been going on are greatly appreciated.

You know what’s the worst part? Android 1.5 users are not going to get an update that fixes this problem. HTC’s been promising a Hero update for months. They first promised an update to 1.6, then an update to 2.0, and now an update to 2.1, but with no news on when this will happen.

And when it does happen, will they update while preserving user data, or will we have to lose it all? Neither HTC nor Google offers any insight into this.

Had been using it for a month. Update wiped 43 passwords. There are backups but not conveniently accessible. I don’t know if this is a chance I want to take again. Any idea when you’ll be confident? MyBackup did not help to restore. Elegant interface but disappearing data is a problem….

@Gerry: The “automatic (and manual) backup to SD function” is nearly done and will be released this week if nothing unfortunate happens. /MobisleApps Team

I had been holding onto hope that my lost notes were still somewhere in the phone. Bummer :(

I spoke to the developer in charge of Spotify’s Android client and they as well encountered this problem.

Thanks for the explanation of the problem. Has Google acknowledged this bug as a known issue and taken steps to warn developers about it? There are still a lot of users stuck with Android 1.5, and it certainly isn’t fair to permit developers to be blamed for a bug for which Google is responsible. (In fact, one could say that such behavior is “evil”.)

I have a lot of stuff with model numbers on this app and i am still getting this force close. I don’t want to reinstall it if im going to lose all this. Is there a way that i can have all the old notes backed up?

  9. 9 Fredrik Olofsson said at 12:22 pm on March 22nd, 2010:

@Greg. Sort of. There are a few really high end developers that have worked closely with Google that have pointed this out. Hopefully they will fix the problem at least.

@Chris. At this point there isn’t im afraid. There might be a way if you root the phone but that is nothing that we can support as you might understand.

This is a sort of minor but yet annoying thing:

phone: Google Nexus One running Android 2.2.1 build FRG83
Mobisle Notes 1.8.2 (Build: Free ADC 2 edition)

problem … Mobisle Notes (otherwise a superb application, by the way … thanks) doesn’t accept voice input text when I am using the the SlideIT keyboard (a Swype-like app)

SlideIT Full Version 2.1 Dasur Ltd

… It does accept text perfectly well when I enter voice input text with the Android keyboard,

I haven’t encountered any other apps which have any kind of incompatibility with SlideIT (also a very fine app).

    Hi, great app.
But it seems a little annoying bug out there. That is the language setting seems to force reset to as the same as the phone’s locale. The language setting of my phone is traditional Chinese and the Mobisle Notes is english, but this app will always force reset to simple chinese when the app had been restarted.
I’d been try to switch the language setting of my phone like japaness or others, it happans again as I said before.

Minor thing, but really annoying me.
